A good step up from entry level, and good practice for CP flying
By Gregory King
If you haven't perfected and bored yourself flying a V911, stop now and go buy one. Thrash it about and learn it backwards and forwards. Buy two or three...you'll need them. Then come back. :-)

This unit flies with similar moderate power of an entry level micro, but it has flybarless maneuverability, and collective pitch capability. The FBL design makes it MUCH more fun to fly that a flybar design. It responds faster, holds attitude better, and canopy strikes are a thing of the past. I'd like to say it's even easier to fly, but I'm sure the twitchier response makes it harder to fly until you train yourself. Compared to a flybar 450, I actually find the much faster response to be a benefit...no control lag to factor in. It also handles wind surprisingly well.

Flying CP (stunt mode, idle up, etc) allows you to fly inverted and do more tricks. This opens up a new level of training and proficiency.

The TX610 controller is a good match. I recommend getting it in RTF form, as the programming is simpler than using a TTX650 or other general purpose transmitter. and the travel suitcase is a useful feature. The only downside is the TX610 doesn't have wireless training capability (like other SLT radios), but you wouldn't use it for flying this guy much, anyways.

I recommend modifying the pitch curve to remove negative pitch in normal mode (values below 50). It causes negative thrust when you cut power...not very useful in normal mode.

Downsides? It's more fragile than the V911. The tail boom splits apart (put super glue on it), and the landing skid is surprisingly brittle in places. Some legs snapped off, others won't break even if you try to bend them off.

If you have a little more experience, you may want to skip this model and get the SS or SSL brushless models (available May 2013). The power of the brushed motor is a bit weak, and will likely wear out quickly.

It's Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

Flown rc cp heli's for quite sometime now. The reason i chose helimax was because of the good youtube reviews and stellar price. You can't rebuild this thing for twice the cost of this deal right now. OK, so i took it out of the box. read through the manual somewhat and plugged it all up. immediatly when trying to fly it i realized that it was wanting to dump itself to the right so i said "ok, maybe it just wasn't calibrated from the factory. np" I'm pretty good at that stuff and wanted to customize the pitch throttle exp etc anyway. well didn't seem to matter how much trim i gave it or if i tilted the swash to the left or made it straight it still wanted to pull to the right. after rummaging through the web for quite a while i found a post where they guy was having the same issue and it was determined the TAGS system was failing. not only that but i also noticed that with the throttle all the way at zero it would spin the blade slowly unless i pressed harder than i needed to to make it stop. at this point i contacted helimax and told them my issues. they were great and sent me a ups label the same day and it was about a 3 day turn around and i had a new heli and have flown it hundreds of times since then with no issues other than my own competence. I decided to purchase a second one (tx-r version which will bind to the rtf model's transmitter) because i was interested in more batteries which were looking at about 10 dollars a piece for and honestly its a steal to just buy the second heli even just to part out eventually. My plan is to alternate flying them per battery to disperse the wear and tear between the two and hopefully add just a little more life to these itty bitty motors. When i contacted helimax i told them of my disappointment with not only one issue with my first ever helimax but two. they responded with upgrading my head on my heli and i cannot be more pleased with their company. Its touchy when calling a technician about a heli because they are easy to destroy but they didn't doubt my word and just told me to send it back and they would fix it. I'm sticking to micro's for a while due to the low to nil upkeep cost. I'm tired of paying 100 dollars and spending half a day leveling blades and what not. Thanks helimax. looking forward to doing more business with u at this rate.
