Kotobukiya Star Wars: Jaina Solo Bishoujo Statue

Product Description

A Kotobukiya Japanese import. It's been a long time coming, but Star Wars is now officially joining Kotobukiya's lineup of Bishoujo (Japanese for "beautiful girl") statues. Get ready to see the lovely ladies of all eras of the ultimate science-fiction powerhouse reimagined like never before. First up in the new Star Wars series is ace pilot/Jedi warrior/daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, JAINA SOLO. One of the most popular characters in the Expanded Universe, Jaina has appeared in numerous novels and comic books that take place after the events of Return of the Jedi and now comes to you in a fantastic Bishoujo statue based on an illustration by master Japanese illustrator Shunya Yamashita. A skilled pilot and member of the illustrious New Republic Rogue Squadron, Jaina Solo strikes a casual pose in her iconic orange flight suit, the same outfit worn by pilots for generations (including Luke Skywalker in the Battle of Yavin). But the pretty young Jedi puts her own spin on the uniform, wearing it stripped down to the waist to reveal her tank top. Meanwhile, Jaina holds her helmet in one hand and her flight vest and lightsaber in the other. Like all Bishoujo statues the cute Jedi has an incredible sculpt, with intricate outfit details like folds and straps. The highlight is of course Jaina's beautiful bishoujo-inspired face. Standing 9" tall (1/7 scale) on a special display base incorporating the Rogue Squadron emblem. Not only is Jaina the first Star Wars Bishoujo Statue, she's also the first Extended Universe character brought to life by Kotobukiya. She looks great on her own, and she'll make the perfect addition to any Star Wars or Bishoujo collection.

A great statue to display
By Macy
Jaina Solo is my second-favorite SW EU character (first place goes to Mara Jade) and was ecstatic when I heard Kotobukiya was making a bishoujo statue of her.

The sculpt is amazing. The creases in the flight suit, the hanging straps, her messy hair, and her face all combine to create a stunning character. Another pro is that the design is pretty restrained for a bishoujo statue. Compared to the statues in the Women of DC line, Jaina does not have boobs that tumble out of her tank top nor does she have her ass jutting out. Both aspects would have turned me off the statue immediately - no way in hell Jaina would ever do that - and I'm so glad Jaina's pose is more friendly and relaxed rather than sexy.

CON: getting the lightsaber in her hand is pretty tricky. The "pin" in her hand AKA her pinky finger goes into a teeny hole in the hilt of the saber. If the pin doesn't fit properly into the saber, don't force it as the saber is slightly bendy. I was afraid I was going to snap it.

Another con for me is the Rebel crest on her helmet. Yes this is nitpicking but Jaina's a New Republic/Galactic Alliance pilot. Why does her helmet have the Rebel crest? The statue's base sticker is the Rogue Squadron crest. They could have just gone with that instead of the Rebel crest.

Beautiful amount of detail
By SomeKidInCollege
Once again, Kotobukiya has proven itself to be a top-rate company with top-rate products. It has a sturdy stand and minimal assembly required, and the details are consistent with the typical Kotobukiya treatment. If you like Alicia Melchiott, you'll love this.

An...Odd Choice
By Zeck
So, how many of you saw that title and immediately got ready to be upset? I'll explain the title in a moment, after I finish freaking out over this statue. Totally. Amazingly. Awesome!

*** *** Reader, ye be warned: There WILL BE SPOILERS in this review regarding Jaina and her brothers' fates. If you're not up-to-date on your Expanded Universe reading, you may want to skip the next paragraph and just jump straight to the review of the statue. You have been warned. *** ***

This is Jaina Solo, daughter of Han and Leia, twin sister of Jacen Solo, and older sister of Anakin Solo. I'm assuming that, if you're as excited about this statue as I am, you already know all this. Sadly, she is the only remaining Solo child. Anakin died in the war with the Yuuzhan Vong, and Jaina was forced to kill her twin, Jacen, when he turned to the Dark Side and launched the galaxy into civil war. She is knighted by Luke Skywalker and given the title "Sword of the Jedi," a title which she holds proudly. Jaina is always on the front lines of any battle, whether it be with her lightsaber or her Stealth X starfighter. She's not only a great swordswoman, but also an ace pilot and a crack mechanic. She has her mother's appearance, but her father's stubbornness and rather reckless behavior. It's all these traits that make Jaina into the woman she is, and why Jagged Fel ends up falling for her and marrying her.

Okay, it's safe to read again. Did I mention how excited I am about this statue? Because I am totally excited. When I saw that an Expanded Universe (meaning Star Wars outside of the movies) character was getting a Bishoujo statue, I was thrilled. Finally, these characters would be getting some recognition. When it turned out to be Jaina, I hit the roof. The only person I would have liked more is Tenel Ka--hear that, Kotobukiya? Get on it.

Jaina comes semi-dressed in the classic Rebel flight suit: Bright orange. I figure it's because orange is easier to spot if you're forced to eject from your starfighter. She causally cradles her helmet in her left hand and carries her chest vest in the other. Something that is different in the actual statue, as compared to the picture, is that Jaina isn't holding her lightsaber. She is actually levitating it slightly in her hand with the Force. I'll explain that in a moment.

The design on Jaina's outfit is limited. After all, it's a flight suit and Jaina has never been a fan of wearing fancy clothing. She prefers her jumpsuit, Jedi robes, combat suit, or, if she's at Jag's place, his shirt. However, the detail that Kotobukiya put into the simple design of Jaina's outfit is amazing. Her flight suit is unzipped down to her waist, and it has all the folds and creases in it that you'd expect an article of clothing to have in that condition. The grey straps around her legs are free-floating and not attached, just like they were in the movies. Her tank top is wrinkled to the point that you really believe she was wearing it under her flight suit. Her left boot has eight of those little cartridge-things around it, and while I still don't know what they are, they are part of the fighter pilot design and a nice touch on her.
The flight vest in her right hand looks like it's made out of that rubbery material from the movies, but it is made out of the same sturdy material as the rest of the statue. The fact that it looks otherwise shows how much care Kotobukiya put into this statue. Her helmet is also spot-on, with the yellow tinted eye goggles, the chin strap, and the Rebel Alliance crest on both sides. This is the classic Rebel pilot outfit with the Solos' daughter's own unique take on it--and it works. Those of you familiar with Jaina know that this is exactly what she would look like.

Her face is amazing. It's very simple, with her brown eyes and a slight smile on her face, but that's what makes Jaina, well, Jaina. Her hair is on the verge of being a mess, and Kotobukiya's styling of it here is perfect. It falls around her face and shoulders like she just pulled her helmet off and she doesn't care how she looks. The only thing that could make this more her would be if she had a smudge of engine grease on her her cheek.

As I said earlier, her lightsaber is not held in her hand, but instead floats above it. This, combined with the helmet-on-the-hip, messy hair, flirty smile, and the slightly confident/cocky stance she has makes me feel like she is showing off, maybe to her father or her husband. "What's what? You don't think I can handle it? Oh really?" And I'm sure whoever she's showing off to immediately felt foolish for doubting her.

Now that I'm done praising the statue, let's talk about how it works. Jaina is the first Kotobukiya statue I've ever had to assemble. When you open the box, Jaina has been sliced in half (taking lessons from Darth Maul, I assume). You simply need to slide her torso onto the the giant peg on her lower body. After this point, you may freak out slightly like I did because you'll notice something: Jaina's hands are missing. You will see her lightersaber, her helmet, and her vest, but no hands. Don't freak out. Her hands are attached to the accessories. I believe this was done because it would be easier have the accessories attached to her hands and then have her hands attach, than attempt to attach her accessories to her permanent hands (follow that?). Getting her hands to slide on was a bit tricky. Just be patient and a bit forceful and you'll eventually get it. There are instructions included as well, so read those if you're stuck.
Now for that floating lightsaber. As you may have guessed, it doesn't really float. There's a small hole in its hilt where you insert a tiny peg on Jaina's pinky. It's rather difficult to get the peg to go in, as it bends if you apply too much force. However, once it's in, the illusion is that the lightsaber is floating. An effect that I think is much nicer than just having her holding it.

Now, for the part you've all been waiting for: The title. Why did I say this is an odd choice, when I clearly love Jaina so much? It's because Jaina isn't the most well-known Star Wars female. That would be her mom. She's probably not even the most well-known Expanded Universe character. I'm betting that honor goes to Mara Jade, or perhaps Ahsoka. So why didn't Kotobukiya start with one of those characters? I have no idea. Ahsoka and Leia do already have Kotobukiya statues, but they aren't Bishoujo ones. Still, the fact that they started with Jaina gives me hope that my other favorites, Tenel Ka and Tahiri (two other girls who attended the Jedi Academy with Jaina), will show up. Kotobukiya has already all-but-officially confirmed that the next girl out will be Mara Jade, which I totally intend to pick up.

Educational: This girl requires assembly, and some difficult assembly it can be. Just be patient (it's the Jedi way, after all). Still, I'm sure if Jaina knew she'd have a figure made of her, she'd want people to build it. She likes tinkering and building things herself.

Bottom Line: Buy. This. Statue. Let Kotobukiya know that we are interested in the Expanded Universe girls. True, this is a departure from their normal work: the breasts are average size and not melons like on other statues and the only sexual appeal it has is if you understand her character and why her looking like this is flirty and hot, but this is my favorite Bishoujo statue. Period. I think only Tenel Ka could replace Jaina as my favorite (*cough* get on it Kotobukiya *cough*). I think I might be a bit biased on that point though. Still, Jaina's a great start. Here's hoping that Mara Jade comes out soon, and that we can look forward to Tenel Ka and Tahiri later.

Are you noticing that I REALLY want a Tenel Ka one? Have I made that clear enough yet?
